1 kg gold bars: the kilobar explained for wholesale buyers

A 1 kg gold bar, or kilobar, weighs 1,000 grams: 32.15 troy ounces. It is the standard wholesale bar of the Gulf and Asian gold trade, cast at 995 or 999.9 fineness, and a standard format for refined gold in the Gulf and Asian trade.

How many ounces are in a kilo of gold?

A kilogram of gold is 32.1507 troy ounces, because one troy ounce is exactly 31.1034768 grams. Gold is always priced in troy ounces, which are about 10% heavier than the ordinary ounce used for food (28.35 g), so a kilo is 35.27 ordinary ounces but only 32.15 troy ounces.

995 or 999.9: the two kilobar grades

  • 995 kilobars contain at least 99.5% gold, 31.99 fine troy ounces. The UAE Good Delivery standard, developed by DMCC in Dubai, accredits refiners specifically for their production of 1 kg bars of 995 fineness, and the DGCX delivery unit is a single 1 kg bar of 995 fineness.
  • 999.9 kilobars ("four nines") (see gold fineness) contain at least 99.99% gold. The Shanghai Gold Exchange's Au99.99 contract is a 1 kg ingot of 9999 fineness. Jewellery manufacturers and many Asian buyers specify four nines.
  • An ISO standard exists for the format: ISO 24018:2020, specifications for the 1 kilogram gold bar.

The London market's Good Delivery bar is not a kilobar: it is a bar of 350 to 430 fine troy ounces (about 12.4 kg). See gold bar sizes and weights.

How much is a 1 kg gold bar worth?

A kilobar is worth its fine gold content multiplied by the gold price. At the LBMA Gold Price PM of 11 September 2026 (USD 4,386.25 per troy ounce):

BarFine troy ouncesValue of the gold content
1 kg, 999.932.148about USD 141,000
1 kg, 995.031.990about USD 140,300

Retail buyers pay a premium over this for small quantities; wholesale lots trade close to the benchmark, with a differential for the bar's brand, fineness, location and whether it needs re-assay. Bars from refiners outside the recognised good-delivery lists are normally assayed on arrival. See how gold from Uganda is priced, or compare the value of other bar sizes.

Who buys kilobars wholesale

Kilobars are the working unit of the physical gold trade in the Gulf, India and East Asia: refiners, bullion dealers, jewellery manufacturers and trading houses buy them by the kilogram and by the hundred kilograms. Dubai is a regional import, export and redistribution hub, and its largest export destinations are India, Turkey and other Middle East countries. See how gold is bought in bulk.

Kilobars from Uganda

Once our licensed supply route is in place, refined bars from Uganda would be quoted as 1 kg kilobars at 999.9 or 999.0. No Ugandan refinery is on the LBMA Good Delivery List, so a buying refinery assays the bars on arrival, and the price basis reflects this. Any lot we eventually quote would need to carry an export permit, a certificate of analysis authenticated by the country of origin and origin records. Read the full gold bar specification, how gold assay works, or request a gold quote for kilobars.
