How much does a gold bar weigh? Gold bar sizes and weights
A standard gold bar, the London Good Delivery bar held by central banks, weighs about 400 troy ounces: 12.4 kg or 27.4 lb. The rules allow 350 to 430 ounces of fine gold. The most traded bar in the Gulf and Asia is the 1 kg kilobar, and retail bars run from 1 gram upwards.

Why a "400 ounce" bar is not exactly 400 ounces
Good Delivery bars are cast as they come out of the refinery, then weighed and assayed, so each bar has its own weight and fineness stamped on it. The LBMA accepts bars containing between 350 and 430 troy ounces of fine gold, at a fineness of at least 995.0. A bar's value depends on its fine gold content, not its gross weight.
Gold bar dimensions: how big is a gold bar?
Gold is dense: 19.3 grams per cubic centimetre. A 400 oz bar has a volume of about 645 cm³; the LBMA's recommended dimensions are a top face about 250 mm long and 70 mm wide, and a height of about 35 mm. A kilobar is about 52 cm³, small enough to hold in one hand, and each refiner sets its own exact dimensions.
Troy ounces and ordinary ounces
Gold is weighed in troy ounces (31.10 g), not the ordinary avoirdupois ounce (28.35 g). A troy ounce is about 10% heavier, which is why a kilogram is 32.15 troy ounces but 35.27 ordinary ounces.
Which bars wholesale buyers trade
Wholesale buyers deal in two bar types: Good Delivery bars in the London market and kilobars in the Gulf and Asian physical trade. Once our licensed supply route is in place, refined bars from Uganda would be quoted as kilobars.
