Gold
How much is a gold bar worth? Value by bar size
A gold bar is worth its weight of fine gold multiplied by the gold price. At the LBMA Gold Price PM of 11 September 2026 (USD 4,386.25 per troy ounce), a 1 kg bar held about USD 141,000 of gold and a 400 oz London Good Delivery bar about USD 1.75 million. The price a dealer charges or pays differs from this by a premium or a spread.

How to work out a gold bar's value
Value = weight in troy ounces × fineness × gold price per ounce. One troy ounce is 31.1035 g, so a 1 kg bar is 32.1507 oz; at 999.9 fineness it holds 32.148 oz of fine gold. Multiply by the day's price per ounce to get the value of the gold. See gold bar sizes and weights and gold fineness.
Why the price you pay is different
- Retail premium. Dealers selling small bars to the public add a premium for manufacturing, distribution and margin, so small bars cost more per ounce than kilobars.
- Buy-back spread. A dealer buying a bar back pays less than the value of its gold.
- Wholesale differential. Wholesale buyers of kilobars and Good Delivery bars trade close to the benchmark, adjusted for the refiner's brand, fineness, location, delivery terms and whether the bar must be re-assayed.
- Brand and standard. Bars from refiners on a recognised good-delivery list trade without re-assay; others are assayed on arrival.
A bar offered far below its value is a warning
Because a genuine bar is worth close to its gold content anywhere in the world, an honest seller has no reason to offer a large discount. Offers of cheap bars, especially with a request for fees or payment before delivery, are a recurring pattern in reported Uganda gold scams. See fake gold bars and Uganda gold scams.
Buying gold bars wholesale
Wholesale buyers deal in kilobars and 400 oz Good Delivery bars. Once our licensed supply route is in place, refined bars from Uganda would be quoted as kilobars at 999.9 or 999.0, priced against the LBMA benchmark with a stated differential.
