Uganda gold discovery: is the $12 trillion claim real?
No. In 2022 Uganda's mining ministry reported 31 million tonnes of gold ore, from which a spokesperson said about 320,158 tonnes of refined gold could be extracted. That figure is more than all the gold ever mined. The confirmed deposits are far smaller: Uganda's first large-scale gold mine holds proven ore containing roughly 24 tonnes of gold.
What was claimed
In June 2022 Uganda's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development said exploration surveys had identified about 31 million tonnes of gold ore, most of it in Karamoja in the north-east. A ministry spokesperson was reported as saying that an estimated 320,158 tonnes of refined gold could be extracted from it. Press reports valued this at USD 12 to 12.8 trillion, and the story has recirculated every year since, often presented as a new discovery.
Why the numbers cannot all be gold
Three checks show the refined-gold figure is not credible:
| Check | The claim implies | For comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Grade | 320,158 t of gold in 31 million t of ore is about 10,300 grams of gold per tonne | Uganda's Wagagai mine: 0.81 g/t. Most gold mines work at 1 to 5 g/t |
| Global stock | 320,158 t of gold | All gold ever mined and still above ground: about 222,600 t (World Gold Council, mid-2026) |
| Global reserves | More than five times the world's known reserves | World below-ground reserves: about 61,000 t |
The ore tonnage may be real, but 31 million tonnes of ore at a normal grade would contain tens of tonnes of gold, not hundreds of thousands. At Wagagai's grade it would contain about 25 tonnes. No resource estimate under a recognised reporting code (JORC, NI 43-101 or equivalent) has been published for the claim.
What has actually been confirmed
- Wagagai, Busia. Uganda's first large-scale gold mine was commissioned in August 2025. The Uganda Investment Authority gives 30 million tonnes of proven ore at 0.81 g/t, which is about 24 tonnes of contained gold (our calculation). Planned output is about 1.2–1.5 tonnes of refined gold a year (reported: 1.2 t by the Uganda Investment Authority, about 1.5 t by UN experts).
- Airborne survey, Karamoja and Lamwo. In September 2025 the ministry reported gold, rare earths and base metals from a national airborne geophysical survey. It gave an estimated 139,000 ounces of gold in the areas covered (about 4.3 tonnes), with potential up to 160,000 ounces, and officials called the findings preliminary.
- Recorded production. Official recorded mine production has been about 15 kg a year or less in recent years, while Uganda exported about 62 tonnes in 2025, most of it not mined in Uganda. See gold production and exports.

What this means for a buyer
The "USD 12 trillion" story is used in fraudulent offers to explain why large tonnages of cheap Ugandan gold are supposedly available. Treat any offer that cites it, or that promises tonnes of gold at a discount, as a warning sign. Read how Uganda gold scams work.
Documented Ugandan-mined gold is scarce, and its availability to foreign buyers is not established. Send a requirement for documented-origin gold, and we will tell you plainly what can and cannot be quoted at this stage. Or see how gold from Uganda is priced.
